  • Tesco Faces Fine for Illegally Employing Foreign Workers

Tesco Could be Fined £200,000 after Employing Workers in Breach of Visa Conditions

Tesco faces a fine of up £200,000 – made up of a civil penalty of £10,000 for each employee working illegally– after the UK Border Agency arrested 20 of its staff who were working illegally by exceeding the hours they were entitled to work under their student visas.

Employers can avoid the risk of a fine by checking employee’s entitlement to work in the UK, or whether there are any restrictions – such as in Tesco’s case, the amount of hours they can work – and otherwise providing evidence that you had carried out the legally required checks. See the UKBA guide for more details, or use the online tools.
