House of Lords Approve Changes to Employment Law
After Labour withdrew its amendment, the “Employment Tribunals Act 1996 (Tribunal Composition) Order 2012” was approved by the House of Lords this afternoon.
The Opposition did not withdraw its amendment to a motion on the Unfair Dismissal and Statement of Reasons for Dismissal (Variation of Qualifying Period) Order 2012, but that amendment failed to secure the support of the House, following which the Order was also approved.
The Government, in replying to the amendment motions, did commit to report on the impact of the Orders, but these are not expected within the timescale Labour were seeking and following a division (vote), the amendment was lost.
The Orders will now become Statutory Instruments, and apply in law from 6 April 2012.
